After a lifetime ‘on the spanners’ building and prepping vehicles for outback travel, I know a good workshop when I see one. Like most complicated things, the answer’s pretty simple. I look for longevity, local support, management who are committed to the company and staff who stick around. It’s not about flash advertising, low quotes and big promises, it’s about consistency. Getting the right team working on your car is the cheapest insurance on earth.
That’s why we take our family vehicles to McCormacks Auto Service in Sandgate. A three generation family business run from the same premises that’s big enough to cover everything – mechanicals, servicing, panel and paint, 4WD fit outs, auto electrical work and even a dedicated tyre service – yet still small enough that I know most of their names. They’ve handled all Milo2’s modifications and pre-trip servicing, done the panel and paint on our 45 year old Holden and last week when my nephew needed a new clutch in his Hilux he drove across town to get it done by McCormacks. That’s right, we live south of Brisbane but we happily drive to Sandgate to get the job done properly.
It’s hard to beat the combined experience of three generations and staff who stay for life when it comes to getting things right in the automotive trade. To me it’s just as critical that the wife’s car doesn’t let her down on the way to the shops as it is that my old truck makes it home from the Simpson. If you love your travelling, respect your vehicles and know what you’re doing, you’ll be building a relationship with a company like McCormacks Auto Service.
